Rio de Janeiro Court Drops One Charge against Lochte, Two Remain

According to USA Today, an appellate court in Brazil cleared the 32-year-old Olympic swimmer of any criminal charges, concluding that Lochte did not break the law in exaggerating the details of an incident at a gas station during the Rio Olympics in August.

With the Centre Court roof closed because of rain earlier in the day, creating echoes with each thwack of racket strings against ball by the two big hitters, Muguruza was too good down the stretch. Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen had been out celebrating after the conclusion of the swimming competition at the Rio Games.

The three-judge panel, in a 2-1 ruling, noted that Rio police, not Lochte, had initiated the investigation and that the story he first told NBC did not meet the standard of a false report.

Since equaling Pete Sampras and William Renshaw (who played in the 1880s) with a seventh title at Wimbledon in 2012, Federer has come this close before to No. 8.

"We are pleased that the Court has finally dismissed the criminal prosecution against Mr. Lochte, while also acknowledging that he committed no crime while in Brazil".

But Cilic seemed distracted by a delay of a couple of minutes after his first-serve fault at 6-6, when a female spectator who appeared to feel ill was helped from her seat and out of the stands. And she was so close to gaining the upper hand against Muguruza, holding two set points at 5-4 in the opener.

USA Today reported that prosecutors have 15 days to challenge the ruling.

Muguruza can say the same, of course, and she was particularly thrilled at the thought of the player she beat to earn the trophy.

Video captured by surveillance cameras showed the athletes getting into a confrontation with security guards at a gas station. Lochte was entered in a small meet this week but withdrew, reportedly because he was not in race shape.

Lochte lost multiple sponsors stemming from the incident and became a national punch line, but has continued to train in the pool and is eyeing another return to the Olympics in 2020 for the Tokyo Summer Games.

He was ineligible to compete in the US trials for the upcoming world championships in Budapest, but is entered in three events in the Los Angeles Invitational meeting at the University of Southern California, where he is now training with the Trojan Swim Club.
