Stressed Froome survives in yellow as Mollema wins stage

Froome was dropped because of a mechanical problem on his bike ahead of the last big climb of the day. I've worked for it so hard in the last few years.

Here is a look at the other contenders ahead of Tuesday's Stage 16 that will lead the peloton to the gateway to the Alps in Romans-sur-Isere. And it was Federer, not Cilic, who faced the match's initial break point, 15 minutes in, trailing 2-1 and 30-40.

"Wimbledon was always my favourite tournament".

So why is the 2017 Tour de France proving to be such a tight contest?

The American won the Tour in 1986, 1989 and 1990, but missed out on the chance of a first victory in 1985 when he stayed loyal to his La Vie Claire team leader Bernard Hinault despite looking ready to challenge the Frenchman.

"I very rarely make a plan, it is just [about] opportunities", said Martin afterwards. He won again in 2009 and 2012.

"It's going to be every second at this point", Froome said, "every second all the way into Paris". He managed to carry the yellow jersey in to the Tour de France's second and final rest day.

"It's been a long road", he said. Froome looked cooked but Nieve and Henao burned themselves to deliver him back as far as they could.

Then, on the penultimate stage, comes a 22.5km time trial in Marseille, where many predict Froome will post a time substantially better than his GC rivals. He finished hot on the heels of Matthews.

"I never set objectives, I never say my ambitions".

"I gave it my best", Cilic said.

"When the pace went up [by Ag2r], that's when I had the issue".

In the next game, Federer broke to lead 3-2.

Best Young Rider (White Jersey): Simon Yates of Orica-Scott has had a firm grip on the best young rider competition since the Pyrenees. Cilic sat and covered his head with a white towel.

The German Tony Martin, alone in the lead, has stumbled on the very steep slope of Peyra Taillade, the collar of the first category, is located before the last 30 kilometres.

It might not have mattered. And to have Landa in the front, just being able to drop off. You get shepherded back in. Against Cilic, he had 23 winners, only eight unforced errors.

AG2R-La Mondiale accelerated suddenly at the front of the peloton with some 45 km left and Froome and some of his team mates were trapped at the wrong end of the split.

"They will throw everything at us and we just have to be ready for that".

Mollema held his arms out in a cross shape as he sped across the finish in Le Puy-en-Velay, the start of a famed Christian pilgrimage route to Spain. He crossed the line with a significant delay.

Froome has also showed great composure and calm when in trouble. Those who had written Federer off needed to grab their erasers. "A lot of people in that group were happy to try to distance him", Froome said.

"On one side, yes, it surprises me. So it's not surprising", coach Severin Luthi said. "They are not [as] wary of me, but I am closer now". Or the teen who, two years earlier, beat Sampras himself at Centre Court in the fourth round, their only tour-level meeting.
